Pitch
Hello, I am Maria, a co – founder of Gro-gel – Kulisha Dunia – meaning let’s feed the world. How? Lets journey to Karamoja to a rural village in Northern Uganda to meet Annet.
Annet is a farmer who hopes to grow enough crops to afford a decent life for her family. However, she is worried about the droughts that constantly destroy her crops and yet she is unable to afford an irrigation system which has caused her family to starve. Her story is one of the nearly 10 million agricultural households in Uganda experiencing food shortages due to the detrimental effects of climate change where droughts are becoming more severe, trapping farmers in a cycle of poverty. Moreover, majority of farmers depend on rain-fed agriculture
To change this narrative, Gro-gel, is repurposing agricultural wastes by transforming rice husks into eco-bio-degradable hydrogels which will hold water during rainy days and release it slowly to the soil in dry days to ensure year round food production.
