Sagar Energy Solutions

Transitioning traditional industry away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy

Pitch

Sagar Energy Solutions is an ambitious clean-tech start-up that targets productive loads in the industrial sector of East Africa. Our mission is ‘to transition niche and artisanal businesses away from fossil fuel dependence and towards renewable energy solutions.’
Currently, in Lake Victoria, over 160,000,000 USD are spent every year on over 216,000,000 litres of kerosene to fuel pressurised kerosene lanterns to attract a type of sardine at night. This sardine equals over 50% of the lake’s yearly catch, is the main source of protein for the entire region and provides jobs for millions of people. This night fishing industry is an incredibly productive sector, yet is fully reliant on an unsustainable practice, posing economic burdens to the fishermen and their families, significant negative health effects, and it also emits over 400,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
Our pilot in Lake Victoria offers the solar Sabi Lamp, an alternative to kerosene for fishing, achieving triple bottom line impact
