Walking around in Glasgow I was shocked to see the amount of flytipped sofas on the streets. Talking to users I found that this decreased lifetime is caused by an inability to clean, transport or repair sofas easily. Fire retardants turn the sofa into hazardous waste and therefore every single sofa ends up in landfill.
The ‘Sofa for Life’ is the better alternative. The user customizes the sofa online and continues to adapt the sofa to accommodate their change of style or life situation. The sofa fits in the boot of a car and the simple assembly does not require any tools. The cushions are machine washable and each part of the sofa can be exchanged and updated. The ‘Sofa for Life’ changes with the user and therefore prevents discard.
The sofa is embedded in a circular service, encouraging users to return parts to enable reuse. All the materials used are renewable, recyclable and naturally fire retardant and therefore no part of the ‘Sofa for Life’ ends up in landfill.
