Tomapaint

From tomato peels to bioresin to coat food metal cans

Pitch

The core of the project is the development of a natural bio-resin obtained from industrial tomato processing by-products (skins), to be applied on the internal and external surfaces of metal cans for foodstuffs in substitution of the standard oil-based resins.
Tomapaint meets the demand for sustainable production and for the safeguarding of consumer health, at the same time increasing the competitiveness of the metal cans industry, valorizing the wastes produced by the preserved industry and reducing refuse.
The highly innovative eco-friendly packaging is less dangerous for consumer health with less risk of contamination and is able to compete with other packaging materials, such as bioplastics. This aspect is very important, since metal packaging is currently perceived by the consumer as being out of date.
Tomapaint can be used on normal production lines, without any modification. The new bioresin is extracted from the cuticle of the tomato peels by means of an optimized, standar
